As Charleston Dance Center celebrates 25 years of dance excellence, we’re turning the spotlight on alumni whose journeys inspire us all. This month, we’re thrilled to feature Gracen Nelson—a lifelong Just Dancer, former faculty member, and now a New York City dancer. Gracen danced with us from 2005 to her high school graduation in 2019, returned to teach from 2021 to 2023, and continues to carry the CDC legacy wherever she goes.
From Charleston to the Big Apple
Gracen’s dance journey kicked off at CDC when she was just five years old, sparking a lifelong love for the art of movement. Her childhood and teenage years were filled with training, performances, and every opportunity our studio had to offer. Even after graduation, she stayed connected through master classes and guest teaching, proving that CDC is truly her home.
After high school, Gracen attended the College of Charleston, where she balanced academics with her passion for dance. She graduated Magna Cum Laude a year early, a testament to her dedication and work ethic. In 2021, she toured as an assistant with Intrigue Dance Convention, perfecting her craft on the road. That same year, she danced her way onto HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones Season 2.
Gracen returned to CDC to share her talent and passion, teaching contemporary and choreographing for two and a half amazing years. Then, in late 2023, she took a bold leap toward her dreams by moving to New York City.
In New York, she has embraced the challenges and opportunities of a professional dance career. Gracen now performs with various companies, teaches at a studio in New Jersey, and continues to choreograph for Just Dance! dancers—proving that no matter where she goes, CDC will always be part of her journey.
“I’ve been really fortunate to work in new and unexpected spaces and I’m able to stay involved with JD as a choreographer.”

Gracen’s Legacy: Inspiring the Next Generation
Gracen’s time at Charleston Dance Center wasn’t just about honing her craft—it was about making connections and leaving a lasting impact. Here’s what some of our current dancers have to say about her:
- “Gracen has brought out a side of me that I never knew I had. I love her style and creativity and I’m so grateful I get to continue to work with her…. Someday I hope to be just like her”– Brynlee W.
- “Gracen has had such an impact on me as a dancer. I look up to her so much. She has taught me to be my authentic self, to always dance in the moment and never doubt who I am! She has changed me as a dancer, a choreographer, and most importantly a person.” – Lorelei L.
- “Gracen is truly a dream and her form of art is so unique and special. working with her is something i will forever remember and cherish!” – Brayah W.
Gracen’s influence on these young dancers is a testament to her talent not just as a performer, but as a mentor and leader within the CDC family.
Gracen’s unwavering drive for excellence shines in everything she does, from academics to dance. I’ve had the privilege of watching her transform from a shy young dancer in the back of the class to an extraordinary choreographer and inspiring teacher. Her unique, free-spirited individuality has not only defined her artistry but also made her one of the most sought-after choreographers today.

Lessons from CDC: Finding Purpose in the Journey
Gracen reflects on her time at CDC as essential to her growth as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer: “JD/ CDC taught me to keep my drive while striving for something that can never be fully achieved: perfection. I learned that obstacles can inspire new, intuitive ways of working. More than anything, it was where I discovered my purpose.”
Advice for Others
Her advice to current and future dancers emphasizes creativity and joy: “Dance can get very serious, but never lose sight of the fun. Be experimental, try weird things, and find pleasure in movement. At the end of the day, we’re just doing silly little steps in a silly little made-up order.”
Favorite Memory: Pre-Show Shenanigans
When asked about her favorite memory, Gracen shared a Year End Performance tradition that still brings her joy:
Every year at recital, we’d shout Blister in the Sun onstage before the curtain opened. It was a perfect mix of excitement and camaraderie.
-Gracen
Gracen Nelson’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and unshakable passion. Her achievements remind us of the power of hard work and the incredible bond of the CDC community. We couldn’t be prouder of the dancer, teacher, and artist she’s become.
